Heuristics for the variable sized bin-packing problem

چکیده
The Variable Sized Bin Packing Problem has a wide range of application areas including packing, scheduling, and manufacturing. Given a list of items and variable sized bin types, the objective is to minimize the total size of the used bins. This problem is known to be NP-hard. In this article, we present two new heuristics for solving the problem using a new variation of P systems with active membranes, which we call a hybrid P system, implemented in CUDA. Our hybrid P-system model allows using the polarity and labels of membranes to represent object properties which results in reducing the complexity of implementing the P-system. We examine the performance of the two heuristics, and compare the results with those of other known algorithms. The numerical results 0F show that good solutions for large instances (10000 items) of this problem could be obtained in a very short time (seconds) using our CUDA simulator.

A novel greedy quantum inspired cuckoo search algorithm for variable sized bin packing problem
Bin packing is a well-known NP-Hard optimization problem which has several real applications. Classical bin packing (BPP) is a simple model where all bins are identical. However, the variable sized bin packing problem (VSBPP) is a generalization of the bin packing problem where bins of different capacities are available for packing a set of items having different weights. The objective is to pa...
متن کاملOnline LIB problems: Heuristics for Bin Covering and lower bounds for Bin Packing
We consider the NP Hard problems of online Bin Covering and Packing while requiring that larger (or longer, in the one dimensional case) items be placed at the bottom of the bins, below smaller (or shorter) items — we call such a version, the LIB version of problems. Bin sizes can be uniform or variable. We look at computational studies for both the Best Fit and Harmonic Fit algorithms for unif...
متن کاملVariable size vector bin packing heuristics - Application to the machine reassignment problem
In this paper, we introduce a generalization of the vector bin packing problem, where the bins have variable sizes. This generalization can be used to model virtual machine placement problems. In particular, we study the machine reassignment problem. We propose several greedy heuristics for the variable size vector bin packing problem and show that they are flexible and can be adapted to handle...
متن کاملEfficient Heuristics for the Variable Size Bin Packing Problem with Fixed Costs
We consider the Variable Size Bin Packing Problem with Fixed Costs, a generalization of the well-known bin packing problem where a set of items must be packed within a set of heterogeneous bins characterized by possibly different volumes and fixed costs. The objective of the problem is to select the bins to pack all items while minimizing the total cost incurred for the selected bins. We presen...
متن کاملExtending Two-Dimensional Bin Packing Problem: Consideration of Priority for Items
In this paper a two-dimensional non-oriented guillotine bin packing problem is studied when items have different priorities. Our objective is to maximize the total profit which is total revenues minus costs of used bins and wasted area. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve this problem where a new coding scheme is introduced. To evaluate the performance of the proposed GA, first an upper b...
